Yes, PS does of course cater for photographers and in a much more intensive professional way. Think of it as having elements of it's bigger sibling, aimed specifically at digital imaging. Photoshop was (still is) aimed at professional use and design, and Adobe came up with Elements.
Photoshop evolved, adding functions as technology moved on a pace, but it wasn't until the birth of Elements One that digital photographers really had something they could call their own. In 1991, when the first PS was released, there weren't many who could afford the hundreds and hundreds of dollars to buy the one megapixel (and less) digital cameras that were around ! In 1990, digital photography hadn't quite taken off as we know it now ) Photoshop was originally designed for use by, well, designers and not photographers. If i can give my perspective as a predominantly CS2 user, who also has Elements and uses it occasionally. Well you are asking this in the Photoshop Elements group, so I guess (quite rightly and fairly) you will get some biased opinions ) The members of this group will be ready to answer your questions when you start editing with Elements. Take your friends advice, and buy Photoshop Elements 5, and have the cash left in your pocket for that new lens you've got your eye on. There are of course many other features that some would count as must have! But if you look through the discussions in this group, you will realise that Photoshop Elements is capable of doing most of what you would wish.
